World Breastfeeding Week – Advantages of Breastfeeding

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an annual celebration which is held every year from 1st to 7th August in more than 120 countries. Organized each year by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF. The week came up with the goal to promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life which provides many health benefits both to the mother and baby, provide nutrients and protect from deadly diseases and infection and at the same time help in development and growth of the child.

Benefits for the Baby

Breast milk is the perfect food for your baby. A mother’s milk has the right amount of nutrients needed for a baby’s growth and development. Mothers milk is easier to digest than formula milk.
Mothers milk has agents called antibodies that help protect newborns from infections such as ear infections, diarrhoea and respiratory illness.
Studies suggest that breastfed babies have lower risks of Asthma, certain cancers, obesity, infection, SIDS and Type 2 Diabetes.

Benefits for the Mother

Breastfeeding give mothers a sense of confidence and feeling of motherhood.
Breastfeeding will use up the extra calories acquired during pregnancy and make it easier for you to lose weight.
It also decreases any bleeding you may be having after birthing. It also helps in birth control as it delays the return of menstrual cycles. It is also found to lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
Breastfeeding saves time and money as no processing is required and is available all the time and at the right temperature and is free from infection.
