World ORS Day- Spread Awareness Save Lives
ORS day is observed every year on 29th of July to spread awareness about ORS as a cost-effective health intervention in cases of dehydration especially diarrheal disease
Acute diarrheal disease is the most important cause of dehydration leading to death in many underdeveloped and developing countries. As per the World Health Organization, Diarrheal disease is the leading cause of mortality in children under five years of age and is the 3rd leading cause of death in children in India. Diarrhoea generally last for few days and leaves the child drained of fluids and electrolytes required for survival. And mortality in most children is due to dehydration.
Other than Diarrhoea, dehydration can be caused by vomiting, excessive sweating, frequent urination, burns and high-grade fever. During acute episodes of vomiting dehydration is caused by excessive loss of fluids and the inability to replenish due to ongoing vomiting. Uncontrolled Diabetes and some medications can lead to very frequent micturition thereby leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. During burns damage to tissues can lead to fluids oozing and dehydration.
Symptoms of dehydration can be Dry mouth, Increased thirst, Tiredness, Sleepy, Decreased Urination, Urine appears more yellowish than normal, Headache, Dry skin and Dizziness
Oral Rehydration Therapy is the most effective and painless way of treating and preventing dehydration through the use of Oral Rehydration Solution. Of the many types available the most widely, safely and effectively used is Low Osmolarity ORS. They can be used along with ongoing feeds and complimentary feeds. ORS is now available in both powder form and premixed form for easy use.
